The current Indian political scenario is way too opportunistic for socio-leftists parties like congress and far leftists like cpi(m) to survive. With the advent of technology, and the unprecedented level of globalization that we are currently experiencing, you just cannot ignore the business-class from policy making. Something the above mentioned parties have censured since independence.
The congress way of governance has been somewhat successfully in the past, specially with the amount of trust people developed in democracy and their ability to curtain power attributed to the army. Congress should also be credited for being non-aligned in times when the whole world was taking sides. But the congress' model of India is not taking us anywhere. They are way too leftists to survive in the current socio-economic environment. In times like these you need an opportunistic leader, one who is willing to make quick decisions. Not that I’m questioning the intent of leaders of the congress party, but their ideology is outdated and simply put, not fitting into the current geopolitical power struggle.
Other than this ideological difference, the congress party is also walking on thin ice when it comes to moral responsibilities. Their selection procedure for party leaders is highly opinionated and sometimes unbelievable to say the least. Also, the way they have treated erstwhile leaders is not going down well with a good section of the society. Not that other political parties are completely transparent, but when you have to choose between two evils, you choose the lesser one. Which brings me to the BJP. Mr Modi has clearly won the country over by long assiduous speeches and it looks like he might end up in south block for 10 years, considering the fact that he has no strong opposition. But he should not think of this election as a victory for him but as a anti-incumbency movement. Something he himself is susceptible to in the coming years.
The current growth rate and ease of business have definitely improved and the government should be credited for that. However, BJP like congress should not digress from the hard truth that the pre-poll promises were not met. One might go a step further and say that BJP was whimsical with its manifesto. The problem according to me is that this BJP government is doing really well on an absolute scale, however juxtaposing their manifesto and their performance, they are not. So, are political parties inconspicuous with their manifesto to garner votes or they seriously feel that these targets can be met?
To answer this question one has to dwell deep in Indian political history. Pre-poll manifestos are hardly realized. Sometimes because it’s just too big a target and sometimes because the party never really had any intention to meet them.
